Chapter Ten
THE DOOR bowed from an intense hit. In an instant, Turk was up in a defensive pose and pushed Alex behind him before the door gave way, breaking at the knob. It swung open with enough violence that it slammed into the wall and bounced shut again. Turk grabbed his gun from the floor and trained it on the door as it was kicked open again.
Behind him, Alex’s breath was ragged with fear. Turk could practically feel his pulse racing. Whether it was familiarity with danger, recklessness, or just being sated, Turk felt a sense of peace. If this was the end, if GalWon’s army had caught up with them, at least he’d had a moment of pure pleasure before the end.
Turk didn’t understand why GalWon wouldn’t have just dropped a bomb on the shelter. Perhaps the evil leader would want to make a spectacle of their capture and an example of the rebel. Turk wasn’t afraid for himself; he had expected a gory end. But Alex… that was hardly a fair end for him.
The door stopped swinging when a filthy hand in fingerless gloves stopped it. From the darkness, Kessler filled the doorframe. His dark hair was singed and disheveled. One high cheekbone was streaked with dried blood and bruised, the rest of his face covered in ash. He looked as if he’d literally walked through hell.
His pants were torn, exposing gashes and inflamed marks on his legs. The tail of his coat revealed the charcoal streaks. His sleeves were in the same condition, though it was harder to see his arms since his right hand held a miniREBEL trained on Turk.
Turk engaged his full-sized REBEL. “My gun’s bigger.”
“That’s just nature. No need to rub it in.”
Kessler’s laser blue gaze fixed over Turk’s shoulder to Alex, and his mouth appeared weighed down by brutal anger. He made a sound in his throat somewhere between a sob and a laugh. “I see you’ve made yourself at home, little… man.”
Turk could no longer hear Alex breathing. He must’ve stopped when he’d laid eyes on Kessler. The poor kid. Turk wished he could reach back to give him a reassuring touch or that he had the words to say that would help. There was nothing Turk could do without losing focus—and losing focus could mean their end.
Alex’s silence filled Turk with anxiety. With Kessler here in person, Turk worried that he was a way station, used by Alex to pass the time until he could see Kessler again. What was Turk to Alex? They’d just met, after all.
They’d shared something special, and it had been Alex’s first time, but was that significant to him? It had to be, hadn’t it? But now that Kessler—the man Alex had chosen at one point—was here, would he want a tired old Subversive? Not that Kessler looked any less tired, and he definitely seemed wild-eyed and worse for wear.
No matter what Alex thought, Kessler was here to ruin everything. That’s what he did. Turk should’ve killed him when he had the chance.
